Lively Performances for a Glittering Event

On April 28, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

It will be hard to not notice the vibrant activities and events on the stage throughout the whole Sunday in Midvalley’s Exhibition Hall on Level 3. As we arrived at the venue, there is already an event on the stage, as the energetic host announced and gave away the prizes to winning participants during the De Palma Packages Talkshow. For this event, the organizing company, D’Organiser, had invited quite a number of guest performers, including the artists from ERA.

Active Image Active Image

And the stage performances are not the only attraction at the front door. The colorful ‘Kolam’ and the baby grand piano, each placed right in front of both entrance, are more than enough as attractions. And the grandness does not stop at the entrance. Magnificent would be an understatement, once you’ve noticed how much effort every participant has poured in to turn their simple booths into an actual wedding ceremony altar or a banquet setting.

Active Image Active Image

There are photographers, bridal studios, retailers and manufacturers of bridal accessories; though in the end, the ones that got most of the attention are the event planners, organizers, caterer services and hotel banquet services. Gilded chairs, ambience decoration, setting up of the ceremony altar, complete with gold or bronze ware, peacock feathers, miniature ‘kolams’ at their respective booths; not to mention the pastries and symbolic traditional food presented in their best looks, up for display.

Active Image Active Image

All in all, it is a fulfilling experience, whether if it is for those looking for a bargain, or those who are just tagging along to have a look at the latest trends this is definitely a fulfilling experience for everyone.

Earth Day- Eco-Friendly Tips for Two

On April 23, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

In two more days, people worldwide will be celebrating a special day for our own Mother Earth. Earth Day, on the 22nd of Apr is to celebrate the greatness of the planet that has sustained us and various other life forms for millennia. For couples who are conscious about environment friendly, and would like to spend an unforgettable Earth Day moment, here are some simple tips that you can have a look.

Off with the Lights

As usual, Earth Day’s most significant action—turning off every light and electrical appliance at home, can actually provide for a nice romantic moment. A candlelit dinner at home, or just a little time alone under the dim candle lights is just as precious as a candlelit date in a fancy restaurant.

Sharing a Shower

While it may not be the best reason to save on water, but sharing a cool shower with your spouse, without the heater on, is another fun and passionate experience. Just remember to turn off the shower after coming out of the bathroom.

Sexy, Sustainable Lingerie

Fancy that bright satin undergarment trimmed with sensuous lace? Try to get one that not only looks good, but has the quality to last you for a few years ahead—organic cotton, hemp silk and other renewable fibres.

Forget the Car

Just for this special day alone (or others, if you and your spouse liked the idea). Forget about the car and instead go for the bicycle ala ‘Tian Mi Mi’ style. For once, you may realize why grandma thinks it most romantic when grandpa took her out for a stroll on his bicycle.

Green Gifts

A box of chocolate, a bottle of perfume or cologne, and various other little gifts, add a little more sweetness by getting them ‘green’—as in organic ingredients, cruelty-free sources and fair trade retails. It brings happiness to not only your loved ones, but others involved in its process as well.

BBQ and Outdoor Party

Earth Day evening is the best time to be spent outdoors, when all lights and air-con are switched off. You can make it as a family private function, or just a simple evening picnic for the two of you.

Take a Vacation

And not the shopping spree type. Try something that will bring you closer to nature, such as a stay at a resort, by the seaside or in the wilderness. Eco parks are a good choice, and the choices are abundant in our own Malaysian backyard—Bukit Merah, Borneo Highlands resort; or just the kampong back home. A breath of fresh air will definitely make each moment together sweeter.

Steps to the Big Day: Bridal Make-Up

On April 15, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

Bridal Make-up is an important aspect in the preparation, along with the bridal gown dressing and hairstyling.

For many couples, their wedding is most likely a one-in-a-lifetime experience, with all its sweetness and memorable moments; even more so for the bride, as the queen of the day.

Bridal Make-up is an important aspect in the preparation, along with the bridal gown dressing and hairstyling. Unlike ordinary make-up, bridal make-up actually requires expertise in the field, to match the best style with the bride’s dress and hair, while enhancing her features.

The interview with renowned make-up artist/lecturer of MakeArt Academy Mr. Jason Ooi will provide us with some insights into the art of bridal make-up. Mr. Jason Ooi had various experience in the art of make-up and styling, in a wide range of fashion. He had started his early career as a Make-up Assistant in a bridal studio, before joining the Shu Uemura Cosmetics Malaysia as a make-up artist, and later on, had taken up assignments from other projects including Fashion shows and TV programs. Among the list of his achievements are as the following:

2007 – 2008
Bridal House as Makeup Assistant
Shu Uemura Cosmetics Malaysia as Makeup Artist
Malaysia yearly Fashion Show
Salsa Fashion Show
Be a Star

2009
MAKE UP FOREVER Cosmetics Malaysia as Brand Ambassador
Tough Jeans Fashion Show
Schwarzkopf Hair Seminar
«FACES» Magazines as Makeup Artist/interview
«Seventeen» Magazines as Makeup Artist
Singapore TV show, Asian Uncut
Fried Chillies TV cooking show as Makeup Artist

An Overview on Bridal Make-up

Bridal Make-up, according to Jason, does have some similarities with the more formal make-up for dinner. Both are to accentuate the most beautiful feature of the person’s face, and both are also meant to last longer than casual make-up, as functions usually last for quite some time.

The main difference between the two styles lies in the overall finishing with the combination of the hair style design and the bridal gown or evening gown worn, with a wider color palette to choose from. Also, to complement most of the gowns, eyes, the ‘windows to a person’s soul’, are usually the feature to focus on, although for some, lips may also be in the feature.

Comparing both day and night make-up, Jason has said that make-up for day occasions (e.g. the actual wedding day) are usually lighter, using lighter shades of colors, as compared to make-up for night occasions (e.g. the wedding banquet), where the dim lighting and yellowish lights of the venue setting may obscure lighter make-up, making heavier make-up the better option.

Step-by-Step Demonstration

In order for us to understand, Mr. Jason had a live demonstration for us, as he explained to us the details regarding bridal make-up. The make-up style which he will be using, he said, is more suited for the dinner banquet, matching the best with simple elegant gowns such as a flowing satin gown.

  • Foundation

The foundation is the foremost important step before applying any make-up. According to Jason, a  properly done foundation (with the right type of foundation used) not only helps smooth over skin imperfections, but can also act as a moisturizing layer, keeping skin soft while making the make-up last longer. The image here shows the difference of the face with foundation on (left) and without foundation (right). For this demonstration, Mr. Jason used a gel-based foundation, mixing 2 different hues to come up with one that matches the model’s skin tone.  (pic)

  • Eyes

After the face foundation, Mr. Jason proceeded to the eye make-up, using a combination of concealer to smooth out lines and puffiness. The colors used for the eyes are purple, magenta and gold, with a suitable amount of black—mainly to accentuate the shape of the eyes, and to freshen up droopy-looking eyes. Purple hues and gold are on the top of the trend now, he added, and are also the right colors to bring out the elegance and allure. (pic)

Fake eyelashes and mascara the final touch, adding dimension as well as accentuating.

  • Cheeks

Before any make-up is applied, Mr. Jason had made sure to highlight and outline the shape of the face and the nose first with different shadings. This will add more dimension to the nose, reduce flatness, while refining the shape of the face. For the blush, a mixture of pink and orange is used, firstly, being suitable for the model’s skin tone, and secondly, goes well with the overall style.

  • Lips

For the lips, a simple layer of foundation is applied first, to smooth out the cracks, especially if the lips are a bit dry. After that, lip-liner is used to outline and balanced out the shape of the lips, which after that, is filled in with lip color of similar hue, finishing with a touch of shimmering lip gloss.

The final finishing is as shown in this picture, where the final change of the gown will complete it all. As one can see the comparison before and after the make-up session, one really has to agree that the skills of the master himself/herself are just as important as product quality and everything else.

And just as Mr. Jason said, the biggest joy a passionate make-up artist gets is when his client shows his/her appreciation for the effort and the end results.

For those who are interested in learning or acquiring Mr. Jason Ooi’s services, you may refer to the MakeArt Academy website for more information.

Easy Foods that could Fix Almost Everything

On March 31, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

It rings true to the phrase—what you eat is what you are; and a healthy eating habit creates a healthy person. For brides to be, preparing for the big day can start from as early as the year before, with the right food and nutrients for that healthy glow that not even the best beauty treatments can produce.

Some of these easy health foods include:

Grapes
At least the ads on grape extracts have its truth—grapes are indeed a good source of antioxidants which protects your skin against dryness, fine lines and sagging, as it counters the action of free radicals, keeping skin soft and smooth. One to one and a half cups of grapes deliver close to 20 percent of a person’s daily vitamin C needs.

Beans, Lentils and Wholegrain Bread
Sugar is said to elevate bad moods, which is a fact. But simple sugars from sugary treats do not work as well as complex carbohydrates, which is the group of food that the ones mentioned above belonged to. Complex carbohydrates take longer time to break down, and in turn, last longer with more consistent results.

Walnuts and Fish
Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids helps control inflammation throughout the body, including inflammatory acne. Walnuts and salmon, as well as halibut and flaxseeds are well-known sources for Omega-3 fatty acids, which is good news for brides to be aiming for crystal clear skin on their big day.

Eggs and Protein-Rich Food
Aside from eggs, other sources of protein are lean beef, poultry, fish or nuts, which can be added into the main course or taken as snacks (esp. nuts). Protein is an important nutrient for our body, especially our hair and nails, which are made of a type of protein called keratin.

Green Tea
For lustrous, shiny hair, green tea may actually help. According to research, the caffeine in tea slows the production of a chemical that shrinks hair follicles and results in thinner strands.

Plain Yoghurt
While breath mints might be the answer for an emergency, research have found that eating plain yoghurt actually helps eliminates bad breath in the long run, something that mints can’t do.

Well, the best cure is always prevention, and sometimes the best medicine is always in what you eat on a daily basis.

The Romance in Fate Bridal Fair 2010- Where Love Sparkles

On March 10, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

Despite superstitions regarding the year of the Tiger, wedding related events are, most of them, unaffected by the hype. For the Midvalley Megaamll, their Exhibition Hall (MVEC) is once again teeming with life at their most recent wedding-related event—The Romance in Fate Bridal Fair 2010. The bridal fair was held on the 5th till the 7th of March 2010, from 10am to 9pm at hall 2 and Hall 3 of MVEC.

For visitors who’d entered the doorway, they’d be awestruck right away by the decorations and décor exhibits—dangling crystal drops from over the archway, with rows of like-themed bridal gowns complementing the designs (and welcoming every visitor towards the hall), and not to mention, a Mercedes-Benz C-230 Avantgarde in bridal décor, just off the entrance.

While the décor is quite mesmerizing, the main attraction for the event is the list of events for visitors’ and buyers’ participation.Buyers who have brought either their magazines (Feminine, My Wedding etc) will stand a chance to win goodie bags worth up to RM70, and there are a few lucky draws with a wide variety of prizes, held by sponsoring companies done during Sunday. Nanyang Siang Pau’s Romance Wedding Awards Ceremony is another highlight for the event.

Of course, the bridal fashion show isn’t to be missed, being another major crowd-puller. Saturday had White Elite and their lead designer wow-ing the crowd with their latest bridal dress designs, which included the hip-&-trendy bridal mini dress, complete with masquerade-esque styling and accessories. Others include Dominique Chan’s Pret-A-Porter 2010 Collection and Albert King & Leeren Bridal during the opening.

Choices and entertaining activities aside, the bridal fair is also quite a knowledge-enhancing experience, as visitors get to attend to various talks and seminars by experts, in regards to wedding customs, beauty-care and make-up plus styling, all free of charge.

All in all, the Romance in Fate Bridal Fair 2010 is one stunning, sparkling romantic event in all its sparkling glory.

Chap Goh Meh

On March 2, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

In general, Chap Goh Meh is the Hokkien pronunciation for 十五暝; the last day of the 15-days-long Chinese New Year celebration. The occasion is also known as the Lantern Festival or 元宵节 (Yuan Xiao Jie) in Chinese. It should not be confused with the Mid-Autumn Festival (The Moon Festival), which is also sometimes referred to as ‘Lantern Festival’ in Malaysia and Singapore.

For this festive occasion, it is marked by feasting and various festivities, with Tang Yuan (glutinous rice ball in sweet soup) as one of the main delicacies. Lighting lanterns, firecrackers and fireworks are also some of the popular activities during the celebration.

However, for Southeast Asian Chinese, this day is also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day, where, traditionally, matchmaking will be held for single unmarried persons (usually girls) looking for potential suitors, and the popular ‘Mandarin Orange-Throwing’ custom will be held.

A Southeast Asian Custom

According to various sources, the custom took its roots in the Southeast Asian Chinese culture, starting from Penang. It is a custom for unmarried girls to find a potential suitor; as well as being the only time where the girls can be seen with their partners.

The custom is practiced during the night of Chap Goh Meh, usually near rivers or lakes. The girls will gather at the bridge, or lakeside, with mandarin oranges in hands, all written with their names. As for the boys, they will either be waiting in boats in the river or lake, or by the banks, ready to grab for the oranges that will be thrown into the waters. For married couples, some will light a candle boat and let it float into the river. It is said that the longer the boat floats, the longer the relationship will last.

While the custom now is not so much on looking for potential suitors or spouses, it is still celebrated as a fun-filled event for all, especially young people eager to meet new friends. For the girls, some even included their cell phone number or emails; thought it might be risky if the wrong person found it. All in all, it has become a get-together event for families and friends alike, where sometimes even DJs and hosts are invited to organize and host programs and various activities (e.g. guessing word puzzles, lantern-making) to spice up the event.

Chap Goh Meh is not the most ideal occasion, when one talk about romance and love, but, it is definitely the best occasion for gathering around, or rekindling passionate love for couples, and a chance to meet new friends, or perhaps, find the ‘Right’ person.

Happy Chinese New Year!

The Colors of Auspiciousness and Romance

On February 4, 2010, in wedding.com.my, by The Chic Mademoiselle

Red is the color of passion and love, as well as auspiciousness in the Chinese culture. Coincidently, Valentine’s Day for this year falls on the same day as the Lunar Chinese New Year. Thus, red is the most suitable color for the 6th Malaysian International Wedding & Beauty Exhibition, which is being held in the same month as both celebrations.

With a Touch of Auspiciousness

This time around, seeing that Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day are the upcoming events, we get to see displays of Chinese-themed gowns (cheongsam, embroidery etc) and bridal gowns with rose and floral motives (roses being the most popular flower during Valentine’s Day). Most of the banquet settings, especially those by Chinese banquet restaurants had incorporated classic Chinese themes into their designs and the menu, as seen at the participants along the Hotel & Restaurant Avenue. The long stretch of the avenue finally ends with HYT Travels, with various attractive New Year and honeymoon package rates all on display.

Fabulous Bridal Fashion Showcase

Banquets aside, the bridal fashion show is another main attraction, with Mon Liza Wedding Castle, and all time favorite Ivory Romance dishing out their best. Mon Liza’s show on Saturday was a colorful display of Victorian-style bridal gowns and evening ball gowns, complete with lace, flowers and ruffles; as well as classic cheongsam with dashes of glimmer and delicate embroidery; all in the brightest colors of spring; thus named its theme as the return of spring—a fresh start to all life forms.

Ivory Romance, on their Sunday show, gave us a brilliant performance as well. For the show, they’d invited celebrities Nasha Aziz and Peter Davis as guest models, along with Rhythm and Hits as the accompanying dance troupe. The range of their gowns on display varied, from conventional white gowns to cheongsams with a contemporary twist in designs and texture, plus shimmering figure-hugging dresses. However, the most eye-catching of the series are the red & black evening gowns and matching all-black glittering groom’s suit, which exude an air of darkness, mysterious and elegance.

Activities and Events

While the bridal fashion show remains the spotlight, other activities added more excitement to the overall event. Shills Beauty offered a live demonstration of their slimming patch and various other beauty products while giving out free gifts to the participants of the live demo, including a swan-shaped Swarovski crystal pendant.

During intermissions, Regal Orchestra presented the audience with a wide range of musical performances by a few live bands under their banner—the Chinese orchestra quartet with their classic Chinese love-songs as well as interesting Eastern-Western mix; the strings and keyboard trio of Hikaru with their all time English favorites; and a contemporary live band belting out popular hits and nostalgic oldies.

At the end of the day, most waited by all, is the Grand Lucky Draw Contest. Starting at 8:30pm, the contest will see 17 consolation prizes worth up to RM4000 and more, plus three top winning prizes, along with free album case, awarded to the lucky couple. Of course, the lucky couple, upon receiving their price, will be asked to complete a ‘task’ set by the host, such as singing a love song to his/her spouse, while the crowd cheered on for the couple. Wedding.com.my, the official website of the event, had been invited as the guest of honor to draw the winner’s name and present them their prizes.

The Conclusion

All in all, it was definitely three fun-filled days for all visitors, and three busy days for all the participants. We certainly need to express our gratitude to The Concept Exhibition, for all their effort and creativity, in bringing us this successful event with all its interesting programs and activities.

However, this will not be the only activity that will be for year 2010, as The Concept will be presenting us with more events for the months to come, including the 1st Malaysian Baby Children and Parent Expo in the late quarter of 2010.
